VSU to announce major gift Monday
By Times Dispatch Staff
Virginia State University on Monday will receive what it terms a major gift from Herndon-based Thompson Hospitality, the nation's largest minority-owned food service company.
Gov. Bob McDonnell will attend the presentation at the school in Ettrick as part of VSU's Spring Semester Opening Conference event.
Thompson Hospitality, founded in 1992, has more than 3,200 employees. It provides meals and facilities management at businesses and institutions in 45 states and four foreign countries.
Ruby and Fred Thompson Sr., parents of current company leaders Benita, Fred Jr. and Warren Thompson, both earned degrees from Virginia State.
Last May, VSU received its first gift of $1 million or more, from the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation.
VSU named its School of Business in honor of Lewis, an alumnus who was the nation's first black billionaire. Lewis, a Harvard-educated lawyer who died of brain cancer at age 50 in 1993, graduated from VSU in 1965.
