Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Month
Celebrated in June
Workplace equality and cultural diversity have proven themselves to be genuine assets to American society, and at the forefront of today's diversity renaissance is the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. This edition of Unity is our celebration of a culture that has made contributions to our society too numerous to count.
While the title of June's Unity is Out and Equal, we borrowed the name from the country's leading organization that educates, trains, and implements LGBT programs at major corporations. Out and Equal, the organization, is located in San Francisco and annually hosts the nation's largest workplace summit.
In keeping with our tradition of spotlighting inspiring people within the cultures we celebrate, Unity presents Soraya Bittencourt, Ron Oden, Nathan Lane and Doug Wright. If you use a computer in a corporate environment, chances are you are using software developed by Soraya. She is one of the world's foremost computer scientists. Ron is the recently-elected mayor of Palm Springs, California. Not only does he himself represent diversity, the town of Palm Springs is part Indian reservation! Nathan is a Broadway performed extraordinaire who is also widely known as the voice of Timon in Lion King, as well as roles in the Birdcage and Mouse Hunt. Doug is the new winner of the 2004 Pulitzer prize for drama with his play "I Am My Own Wife". Read about them all in Unity!
Our featured art comes from five international artists who not only draw and paint with exceptional skill, they are also authors, journalists and winners of prominent citizen's awards. Diversity, as it is represented through fine art, provides a unique, personal, and visual expression of our valuable cultural differences.
Chef Susan Feniger spices up our food page with recipes for marinated skirt steaks and avocado corn relish. Yum! Chef Susan has four cookbooks to her credit and has been a frequent guest of TV talk shows. She's even been spoofed on Saturday Night Live, always a compliment.
You'll also find out about the Commercial Closet, Women on a Roll, and the International Gay Games.
Workplace equality and cultural diversity are no longer buzzwords, they are being implemented with vigor, resulting in personal and business growth for all who accept them. We hope you enjoy learning about the positive impact the LGBT community is making on America.
