Native American Heritage
Celebrated in November
You may have missed the grand opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in September 2004, but there's no need to miss the November edition of Unity, which celebrates the food, art, and culture of Native Americans. The museum's opening was a huge success and a spectacular display of vibrant, Native culture. You can also read more about this monumental event in "Native Peoples" magazine, available at your local bookstore. Editor of the magazine, Gary Avey, spoke with Unity about forces at work within contemporary Native communities and you can read what he had to say in November's Unity.
This edition of Unity also takes a look at the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the premier organization linking young Native scientists and engineers with international businesses. Through the organization's efforts, businesses are able to tap the rich diversity and raw talent of graduating Native high school students.
And for a little high-flying fun, there's a peek at the rodeo world, where Native Americans excel with their world-class riding skills.
There's plenty going on among Alaskan and Hawaiian Natives. Hawaiian music is coming on strong in mainstream America, and this is due in great part to the Mountain Apple Company (MAC). Unity presents three of their hottest artists, whose albums are available in many retail outlets and on the MAC website. And further north in the nation's largest (and coldest) state, the classic Shakespearean drama MacBeth is getting a Native makeover - cast with all Alaska Natives and set within Tlingit culture.
Our art selection from Picture That, LLC, may be our finest yet. Three Native artists with incredible flair are featured in this month's centerfold. Check it out!
Of course, if you're hungry for the flavors of Native America, you may want to go straight to Unity's food section. Chef David Wolfman is our featured culinary artist, and he shares a few of his favorite Aboriginal-fusion recipes. Chef David has his own television show and is also active in sharing nutrition tips within Native communities.
You may not know that lacrosse is the second fastest-growing sport in high schools, or that the American Basketball Association will soon include an all-Native team playing out of Albuquerque. As a matter of fact, there's a lot you may not know about Native Americans, so get your hands on a copy of Unity!
