Disabled Americans Awareness Month
celebrated in October
Particularly for those who are fully abled, there is a tendency to view disability with a focus on the hardship and tragedy. Indeed, it is a shock to hear about events that result in amputations, disfigurement, and paralysis, but this month's edition of Unity hopes to take you beyond the challenges, and see Americans with disabilities as you would anyone else, people who are celebrating their lives.
Outta Sight Travel would be just another travel agency, except that it specializes in cruises for those who are blind and visually impaired. Thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and advances in assistive technologies, a new breed of travel agencies are reaching out to Americans with disabilities, and they are ready to travel!
The Strength Coach is a nationally syndicated radio show that reaches out to all Americans who are going through tough times - crime victims, those with addictions, people going through divorce - and encourages them to find the strength within to overcome. The show's host, Greg Smith, has interviewed countless celebrities like Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Barry Bands, all from his wheelchair.
Our art partner, Picture That, LLC, has once again put together a stunning collection of fine artworks, this time by talented artists whose passion for the canvas transcends their physical disabilities. You'll see it all in Unity's art centerfold.
Heading up our food section this month is Chef Bill Quain, Ph. D. Bill hosted the TV show "Cooking Without Looking", where he shared with viewers not just his cooking skills, but how to get around the kitchen with various disabilities. It's a subject Bill knows well: He is legally blind.
And you'll also read about Ironman Jim MacLaren, whose story begins with surviving not just one, but two tragic accidents. However, it's what Jim did with his life after those accidents that becomes the story you'll really want to read.
Catch it all, plus lots more, in the October edition of Unity.
